Scouting Report: Three Lodges. Two Countries. One Epic Adventure.

We just wrapped up an unforgettable three-week scouting trip across New Zealand and Australia. We explored both new and trusted lodges and evaluated elite hunting paired with local experiences.

Here’s a snapshot of what we experienced—and what could be next for you.

New South Island Lodge for Red Stag, Tahr & Chamois

Tucked in the Southern Alps, this new lodge delivered a powerful combination of premium game, scenic flights, and mountain luxury. It’s ideal for those looking for red stag, tahr, and chamois in stunning backcountry.

Highlights include:

  • Kevin’s daughter, Josie, took her first red stag after a difficult, slow stalk through mountainous terrain.

  • Helicopter drop off tahr and chamois hunting in dramatic alpine country – one of the most amazing experiences of our lives as we weaved in and out of the mountains.  Once the trophies were spotted, the helicopter dropped off Josie, her guide and photographer to begin the stalk in search of these high mountain trophies.  Well done to Josie on some exceptional shooting and keeping her footing in very difficult terrain. On a side note, Josie spent time at a long distance shooting school in preparation for this trip…it paid off!

  • Scenic heli flight through the mountains and to Milford Sound + mountaintop landing with fresh caught lobster & champagne. Not a shabby way to spend the day.

  • Relaxing walk, shop, and dine day in the quaint lakeside town of Wanaka.

  • Excellent food, a welcoming, excellently-appointed lodge and staff, great shopping nearby.

Queenstown Stopover

We broke up the hunt with a two-night stay in Queenstown—perfect for recovery, great food, and scoping out additional experiences. This city offers ideal pre- or post-hunt options for couples or groups.

Highlights Include:

  • Rode the gondola for sweeping alpine views over the city and overlooking the luge below.

  • Steak, seafood, and Kevin’s new favorite ice cream shop.

  • Explored activities like lake cruises, ski terrain, bungee jumping, parachuting, hang gliding and snowshoeing.

  • More shopping for possum-blend sweaters.  Fun tidbit:  Possum in New Zealand look more like a mink and their fur makes amazing sweaters.

  • A walkable downtown vibe with welcoming people and great seafood on the waterfront.

Marlborough, NZ – Trusted Lodge Revisited

Returning to one of our go-to New Zealand lodges reminded us why this lodge is so reliable. The game is strong, the terrain wild, and the touring options top-notch for those bringing spouses or friends.

Highlights Include:

  • Josie took another old red stag which lead to an exciting excursion across a deep valley and stream.

  • Visiting Tahr country near Mnt. Cook—stunning views and strong photo ops with Josie stalking within 20 yards of an exceptional Tahr.

  • Wine-paired lunch, chocolate factory visit, and nearby spa visits.

  • Local towns with ferry rides, fishing, and boutique shopping.

  • Friendly staff, excellent cuisine, cozy yet refined lodging.

Southeast Queensland, Australia – New Outfitter Explored

Just two hours from Brisbane, this operation surprised us with its lush, varied terrain and abundant game. A rugged, species-rich destination for the hunter who’s seen it all.

Highlights Include:

  • Terrain made up of rolling hills, creek beds, rainforests—not what you expect from Australia.

  • High volume of game: rusa, Sambar, black buck, red stag, axis & more.  Many world records have been set on this land!

  • Friendly, welcoming hosts with deep knowledge of the land they grew up on.

  • Basic but clean lodge—comfortable for serious hunters.

Touring: Brisbane, Noosa & Sydney

We rounded out the trip with a taste of Australia’s coastal cities. Whether you’re adding a few days after the hunt or bringing a non-hunting companion, these stops offer relaxation and culture.

Highlights Include:

  • Brisbane: Koala encounters, kangaroo feeding, and vibrant riverside markets.

  • Noosa Heads Beach: Beachfront seafood, boutique shopping, and downtime in paradise.

  • Sydney: Opera House tour, float plane to fine dining, harbor walks, and winter festivals.
