Overview of Alaska Fishing and Adventure Lodge on Prince of Wales Island

Alaska Fishing and Adventure Lodge – Prince of Wales Island

Every morning at this lodge on Prince of Wales Island starts with the same question: what kind of day do you want? Saltwater fishing fighting for halibut and salmon on the Inside Passage. Freshwater fishing for cutthroat, rainbow trout, and steelhead on your choice of 23 lakes and streams. Or a day off the rod for kayaking, whale watching, hiking, or a trip to the bear conservancy. The choice is yours, and you can change your mind by lunch. That is what makes this an Alaska fishing and adventure lodge instead of just an Alaska fishing lodge — the day bends to what you want, not the other way around.

That is what makes this Alaska fishing and adventure lodge different. Most Alaska lodges give you one option: fishing. But if the weather does not cooperate, you’re stuck with no day no on the water or a rough one. This lodge has a backup for the backup. We have never recommended an Alaska fishing and adventure lodge with this much built-in flexibility.

It works for anglers and for groups who want more than just fishing. 15 bedrooms, each with a private bathroom. Chef-prepared meals you order off the menu. House beer and wine included with dinner. Owners Kevin and Lyn Ryter are on site, and they run the kind of operation where the staff seems to know what you need before you do.

If you are comparing Alaska fishing lodges, we also work with an Alaska fishing lodge in Sitka that offers a similar mix of saltwater and freshwater fishing, and an adventure-focused lodge in the Inside Passage with strong activity options. Contact Antlers and Anglers and we handle the details — the lodge, the floatplane transfers, the activities, and the itinerary.

Our Experience at This Lodge

We love Ketchikan, Alaska. That is where our adventure began.

The scenic floatplane ride to the lodge sealed it from the start. From there it did not let up. We caught fish. We watched whales breaching and slapping their tails on the water. Eagles were soaring everywhere and grabbing fish. We saw massive glaciers. One afternoon a floatplane collected us straight from the boat and flew us over the glacier — the kind of moment that is hard to top. We hiked to caves. We fly fished in the heavy rain. Every day outdid the last.

There are more memories than we can fit here. We loved the adventures. But more than that, we loved the people. This is a genuinely family-friendly lodge, and we will be back.

Fishing

The Fishing

Here is the deal with this Alaska fishing and adventure lodge: you have two completely different fisheries, and you can switch between them depending on weather and what you feel like doing.

Saltwater

The lodge sits on the Inside Passage, which means you fish relatively calm waters. Even on a windy day, you get a small chop, not open-ocean swell. The boats are 28-foot heated cabin cruisers with a flushing private toilet and all the tackle you need. Your captain is U.S. Coast Guard licensed, certified in first aid and CPR. You are fishing for halibut, salmon, lingcod, rockfish, and sea bass.

Freshwater

23 lakes, rivers, and streams on Prince of Wales Island, accessed by van from the lodge. Many of these waters are only fished by lodge guests, so you are casting in solitude. You are fishing for cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and seasonal salmon runs. All fly and spin gear, waders, boots, and rain gear are included.

The lodge provides all the equipment. Fly rods, spinning rods, waders, boots, rain gear. You do not need to bring any of it. If you have a favorite rod you cannot travel without, bring it. Just know that felt-sole wading boots are not permitted in Alaska.

One thing to note: the state regulates fishing and can change the rules at any time. There are limits on fish you can keep and slot sizes. The lodge stays current on all of it.

What You Can Catch

Halibut: The most popular bottom fish here. Caught on or near the ocean floor by drifting or anchoring with bait. Average catch is around 40 pounds. Local halibut over 300 pounds have been caught. Good halibut fishing exists all summer.

King Salmon (Chinook): Alaska’s state fish. The largest and scarcest of Pacific salmon. Known for power and endurance. Usually range from 25 to 50 pounds. Most prevalent in June and July.

Silver Salmon (Coho): Hard fighters. Average 12 to 15 pounds, but can top 20. Most plentiful from late July through September.

Pink Salmon (Humpies): The smallest and most abundant salmon in area waters. Average 3 to 5 pounds. Best in July and August.

Chum Salmon (Dog Salmon): Famous for their strength. Available mid-July through August. Average 15 pounds, with occasional fish over 25.

Sockeye Salmon (Reds): The most difficult salmon to catch in these waters. Saltwater sportfishing for sockeye is limited.

Lingcod: Found on or near the bottom over rocky reefs in strong currents. Aggressive predators. Usually 10 to 40 pounds, but can grow to over 50 pounds. Abundant all season.

Rockfish: Over 10 species, including yellow-eye (similar to Atlantic red snapper) and black sea bass. Most weigh 1 to 6 pounds. Good fishing all summer.

Dungeness Crab: Crabbing is available and can be done as part of your regular fishing day. Fish and Game regulations require guests to set and pull their own pots.

Steelhead: The lodge’s specialty. Steelhead run in local streams from April through early June. Fish range from 8 to 12 pounds, with trophy class fish topping 18 pounds. If you are a steelhead angler, this is the honey hole.

Seasons

  • Halibut: Great the entire season
  • King Salmon: Early June to early July
  • Chum Salmon: Mid-June to mid-July
  • Pink Salmon: Mid-July to early August
  • Sockeye Salmon: Mid-June to mid-July
  • Silver Salmon: August to September (August silvers are in the bay, hit rivers in September)
  • Dolly Varden: July to September
  • Rainbow Trout: July to September
  • Sea Bass / Rockfish: Entire season
  • Steelhead: April to early June (best in May)
  • Best Bear Viewing: July to September
  • Whale Watching: Any time

Taking Fish Home

The lodge cleans, fillets, vacuum packs, freezes, and boxes your fish. Each box holds up to 50 pounds, and you can carry two boxes on your return floatplane free of charge. Additional boxes are subject to a freight charge. Freezer storage is available at the Ketchikan airport and at SeaTac if you overnight in Seattle. We do not advise shipping fish home via delivery service.

Everything else — specific gear recommendations, fly patterns, lure sizes — that is in the pre-trip planner we send after you book.

A Day in the Field

Your day starts with made-to-order breakfast from 6:30 to 8:30 AM. Coffee, eggs, whatever the chef is making. By mid-morning, you are on the water or headed to one of 23 freshwater lakes and streams. Whether you are chasing halibut in the Inside Passage or casting for cutthroat in a secluded lake, the guide team knows the spots that hold fish.

Lunch is packed and ready before you head out — sandwich meats, snacks, sweets, and fruit, exactly how you ordered it the night before. You eat on the boat or on the bank, wherever the day takes you. Afternoon fishing varies by what you want to target and how the weather is holding up. If the saltwater gets rough, you pivot to freshwater. If you are ready to wrap up early, the lodge is 20 minutes away by van.

Evenings at the lodge are part of the experience. Appetizers at 6:00, dinner at 6:30, and dessert that you will be talking about on the floatplane ride home. Most nights end at the fire pit or in the game room. Full details are in the pre-trip planner we send after booking.

Lodging

The Lodge — Where You Stay

The lodge sits in a cathedral-like forest beside a quiet bay on Prince of Wales Island. 15 bedrooms, each with a private bathroom and individual climate control. The main lodge has a comfortable dining room and sitting area warmed by a wood-burning stove. Just outside the dining room, there is outdoor seating for the days that cooperate.

The game room has several seating areas, a big-screen TV with movies, a pool table, and other game tables. There is a Jacuzzi, a sauna, and a massage room. The gift shop carries basic outerwear, fleece, and keepers like hats and T-shirts if you forget something.

A group of 20 or more can buy out the whole lodge. It works for a corporate retreat, a family reunion, or a buddy trip where you want the place to yourselves.

Lodge amenities:

  • Jacuzzi, sauna, and massage room
  • Kayaks and mountain bikes
  • Fire pit
  • Board games, pool table, ping pong, poker, shuffleboard
  • Free laundry service
  • Free WiFi (approximately 25 Mbps — satellite, so it is slower than what you are used to)
  • Hair dryers, toiletries, and all-natural amenities
  • Apple TV and DVD player
  • Meeting area
  • Gift shop

Meals

Meals are a highlight here. You order off the menu each morning and evening, and the chef is exceptional. Fish, pork, steaks, and more are on the menu. The desserts are a temptation not to miss each evening.

At dinner, you fill out your lunch preferences from a selection of sandwich meats, snacks, sweets, and fruit. Your lunch gets packed and is ready for you the next morning before you head out.

Breakfast is made-to-order from 6:30 to 8:30 AM. Appetizers at 6:00 PM. Dinner from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, capped off with dessert. House beer and wine are served with dinner at no charge.

The lodge provides full bar service. If you want something specific, let us know and we can have it purchased for you at cost. You can also ship alcohol ahead or check it in your luggage.

Length of Stay / Itinerary

How Long Should You Stay?

Most groups do 3 to 7 nights. You can go shorter or longer — the lodge does not require specific arrival or departure days for groups. That flexibility is one of the things that makes this place work for corporate groups, families, and buddy trips alike.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival in Ketchikan
We highly recommend spending the night before your lodge dates in Ketchikan. Weather delays happen often. On your lodge arrival day, you take a floatplane from Ketchikan to the lodge. Check-in is midday.

Days 2 through 6 — Fishing and Activities
Each day is built around what you want to do. Saltwater fishing on 28-foot heated cabin cruisers. Freshwater fishing on 23 lakes, rivers, and streams. Or a day off the water for kayaking, hiking, whale watching, cave tours, or a massage at the lodge. Non-fishing group members can enjoy activities at the lodge or join a touring excursion while anglers are on the water. Breakfast is made-to-order from 6:30 to 8:30 AM. Appetizers at 6:00 PM, dinner at 6:30.

Departure Day
Check-out is 10:00 AM. We highly recommend spending the night after your lodge dates in Ketchikan as well, given the frequency of weather delays. If you have time before your flight, explore Creek Street, Saxman Totem Park, or grab a meal at one of the local restaurants.

Optional Extension
Rather than heading straight home, consider extending your time in Ketchikan for touring, or add a day in Seattle on your way through. Let us know what interests you and we can build it in.

All itineraries are customized. Tell us what you want and we will build it around you.

Travel Details & Location

Getting There

You fly into Ketchikan (KTN). From there, it is a 30-minute floatplane ride to the lodge. We coordinate the floatplane transfers.

For ease in taking your catch home, the lodge suggests using an Alaska Airlines partner. When you use a partner airline, your fish and luggage can be sent directly from Ketchikan to your home. You will need to transfer in Seattle to Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines runs three to five flights daily between Seattle and Ketchikan, depending on the season.

  • Arrival city: Ketchikan, before 4:30 PM
  • Departure city: Ketchikan, afternoon
  • Check-in: Midday. Please spend the night before in Ketchikan.
  • Check-out: 10:00 AM. Please plan to spend the night in Ketchikan.

Private jets: Most private and corporate aircraft fly into Ketchikan, where the group is then shuttled to the lodge dock via floatplane. Some planes can fly into closer airports to the lodge.

Soft luggage: Floatplane services limit luggage to 40 pounds per person. The lodge provides all fishing gear, waders, boots, and rain gear, so you do not need to carry those. They do your laundry, so you do not need many changes of clothing. Soft-sided luggage is preferred over hard suitcases.

Full airline and flight details are included in the pre-trip planner we send after booking.
