Shooting

Traditional field hunts of wily ringneck pheasant and Kansas prairie chicken have been the specialty of this ranch for over 27 years.

Hunt packages are customized to meet your schedule. Plan to spend one to four days of hunting with arrival the afternoon prior to your first day afield. With a mid-afternoon check in, you may elect an optional shoot at the five stand clay range or take a rod and reel to one of the nearby ponds.

They understand that it takes more than quality gunning to satisfy today’s wingshooting enthusiast.  Hunting parties are kept small for safety’s sake, and all are lead afield by one of the Ranch’s gunless professional guides.  The guides pride themselves on their seasoned dogs from a variety of pointing breeds. The staff utilizes a variety of breeds in escorting hunts at the ranch. Most of the traditional pointing breeds are represented including Brittanys, French Brittanys, German Shorthaired Pointers, German Wirehaired Pointers, English Setters, English Pointers, Weimaraners and Vizslas.

Which breed is best? Depends on what you want and with the understanding that the textbook answer is “there is usually more variation within a breed than there is between breeds.”

The dogs used at the ranch are not necessarily from exotic or expensive lineage, but they become very good due to rapid accumulation of experience with their seasoned kennel mates.

Hunting with Your Own Dogs

Your dogs are welcome at the ranch with your cooperation on some issues that cause many operations to resist allowing guest dogs. Keith and Debra believe that anyone that takes the effort and expense of keeping a dog should be able to take them along on a good hunt.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Links to the companies we recommend:

Travelex Insurance       Ripcord Insurance

While we do everything in our power to protect our clients from travel problems, we cannot prevent illness, natural disasters, wars, deaths, lodge closings and more; we live in uncertain times!  The only way to protect yourself and your investment is through travel insurance. Travel insurance can provide medical coverage, cancellation due to natural disaster, illness, death in the family, lodge closings and other unknowns; in this day and time, anything is possible.  Lodges count on you to protect your investment as they cannot refund your payments due to the nature of the product they offer.

Finally, travel insurance is time-sensitive and must be purchased within a certain number of days of your deposit to cover preexisting conditions, lodge closings and other various issues.  It is still available later but the benefits may be more limited.

Both companies offer evacuation insurance in addition to their travel insurance but Ripcord has more thorough coverage in this area.

The Ripcord membership and travel Insurance provides the highest levels of medical, security, evacuation and rescue services in the industry combined with travel insurance:

  • Remote rescue services from point of injury or illness
  • Medical evacuations to the member’s home hospital of choice
  • The best evacuation and rescue triggers that include rescues for medical conditions that will result in permanent injury in addition to just requiring hospitalization
  • Security extraction services for geopolitical events and natural disasters
  • Involuntary detention resolution services for members who are held against their will
  • Consulting services from special operations veterans, paramedics, nurses, and physicians

Testimonials

I have chased pheasants in South Dakota a few times and I can comfortably say that your establishment wins hands down. The personnel and the setting at the ranch are hard to beat. I will definitely try to make it an annual event.”
R.H., Tennessee

“I know what I am about to say sounds like a commercial, but I think it is true. Your ranch provides the epitome of upland game bird hunting experiences. Great accommodations, great food, great dogs, great people, excellent scenery, and plenty of birds. You couldn’t ask for more.”
R.P., New York

Thank you for another wonderful time at your ranch. You have been so great to accommodate our various hunting parties over the years. I am concerned that D.C. is far enough away that making it back for future hunts may be difficult. But you know I’ll try! I am still struggling to decide whether I enjoy the ranch for the hunting or whether hunting is simply an excuse to eat, drink and be merry.
B.G. – Washington, DC

“My son and I had a fabulous time and have memories that we will carry for a lifetime. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of getting your first pheasant!”
L.D., Missouri

“Everything is first class – the accommodations, the food, the hunt, the service, the people…most importantly everyone sets the stage for a memorable experience.”
T.H., Kansas

”It was a true pleasure to meet you both and have the opportunity to sample and enjoy the fine hospitality and excellent hunting you offer…. Every aspect of your operation is first rate, and rarely have I been made to feel more welcome and at home.”
– J.R., Kansas

We would like to say how much we enjoyed our guides and their dogs. We were very impressed with the professionalism of the guides and know without a doubt our hunt would not have been nearly as successful without them. They addressed every safety issue before we started our hunt and they did everything possible to make sure we had a very successful hunt. On a more personal note I was impressed by how they looked out for the “rookie hunter” in our group. That would be me! I had never hunted pheasant before this trip and I shot eleven birds and was thrilled with the overall experience. I have heard great things for the past thirteen years about your ranch, but it wasn’t until I started working with our committee and with the folks at the ranch that I really understood what this experience is all about. You folks really stepped up to the plate!
M.S., Oklahoma

“I want to say one more time what a great trip we had hunting with you. The folks that take care of us all reflect extremely well upon you two. It is not easy to have a large staff always be hospitable to a large number of guests, and it is one of your best qualities.”
R.B., Texas
“Nicholas (my son), John R and his son had a wonderful time and continue to discuss the few days of complete enjoyment spent at the ranch. I think Nicholas may have stated it best, “Dad, this is one of those rocking chair memories you talk about taking home with you.”
V.H., Oklahoma

“Another exceptional job of getting us into the kind of terrain and hunting environment that we desire. The fact that we were successful in all of our outings didn’t hurt either! As always, the accommodations and hospitality were exemplary.”
D.B., California

“Without any doubt this was my finest experience on any hunting trip ever and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my visit.”
– R.D., South Carolina
