Shooting

Red Stag Hunting Free Range:

Hunting is about as exciting as it gets during the March/ April roaring season.  The favored method of hunting during the rut or roar, as it is referred to in South America, is to glass known rutting areas along the river or in the high plains surrounding the river valley. Once a shooter stag is spotted hunters attempt to stalk within rifle or bow range.  Typical shots average about 150 yards with much longer shot opportunities readily available in this open habitat.   Hunters either hunt off of horseback from the lodge or out of Toyota trucks.   Our clients experience high success year after year on great trophies. Our client’s average 1 to 2 trophies per trip as well as 3-4 free /management stags.

Habitat

The habitat in this area of Patagonia ranges from gentle rolling hills to fairly step mountain terrain at the higher elevations.  The majority of stag hunting takes place in the hills and valleys just off the rivers.

California Wild Quail Hunt:

This is the best kept secret in the wingshooting world!  A true wild quail hunt is difficult to find these days.  You must be able to walk to enjoy this hunt.  Your mode of travel will be horseback or Toyota double cabs.  Dismount your transportation and walk and walk.

These are hard flying fast birds that are difficult to shoot.  This will challenge even the finest wingshooters. Hunters follow well trained pointing dogs through the valley in search of the large coveys. While California quail in the western states have a reputation for running their South American cousins have not developed that strategy and hold incredibly well for the point dogs.

Patagonia Quail Season begins May 1st and ends in August

Fishing

Fly Fishing: season November through May
Fly fishing is what put this lodge on the map more than 20 years ago. It is considered by many to be one of the worlds’ top fly fishing destinations. Northern Patagonia is home to more than 17 miles of the finest trout waters on the planet. Guides are the best in the business and can be found at hot spots all over the world after the local season closes.

There are two very different, but equally impressive rivers, the Chimehuin and Quilquihue, running through the heart of the 50, 000 acres, known worldwide for their crystal clear waters and legendary fishing. In addition they have 3 miles of private spring creek constructed by one of the US’ leading firms for the exclusive use of guests. While the vast majority of fish are caught on dry flies, you will occasionally use a “dropper” in conjunction with the dries. While typical fish would average 14-20 inches, each season they catch monster browns approaching the 30 inch mark. For the more adventurous, they can also offer fishing on the upper and lower Chimehuin from one of their custom drift boats.

Patagonia fishing season is open from November 1st to May 1st. With the private spring creek we can fish twelve months a year at Tipiliuke.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:  REQUIRED!

Links to the companies we recommend:

Travelex Insurance       Ripcord Insurance

While we do everything in our power to protect our clients from travel problems, we cannot prevent illness, natural disasters, wars, deaths, lodge closings and more; we live in uncertain times!  The only way to protect yourself and your investment is through travel insurance. Travel insurance can provide medical coverage, cancellation due to natural disaster, illness, death in the family, lodge closings and other unknowns; in this day and time, anything is possible.  Lodges count on you to protect your investment as they cannot refund your payments due to the nature of the product they offer.

Finally, travel insurance is time-sensitive and must be purchased within a certain number of days of your deposit to cover preexisting conditions, lodge closings and other various issues.  It is still available later but the benefits may be more limited.

Both companies offer evacuation insurance in addition to their travel insurance but Ripcord has more thorough coverage in this area.

The Ripcord membership and travel Insurance provides the highest levels of medical, security, evacuation and rescue services in the industry combined with travel insurance:

  • Remote rescue services from point of injury or illness
